David Smith (QC)

It is with much sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of our friend and colleague David Smith (QC). David passed away at home on Monday 30th March and leaves to mourn his beloved wife Clementine and loving sons Julian and Rupert. A dear father-in-law and doting grandfather, this true gentleman will be greatly missed by all his family and friends. A service of thanksgiving will be announced at a later date.

David was a retired lawyer and Crown Court Judge. He had a long association with both bees and Dr Crane. He became a member of the International Bee Research Association (IBRA) in 1962. Here he met its founder Dr Crane and soon became company secretary of the organisation: a position he proudly held for over 50 years. He also assisted Dr Crane with the publication of the British Bee Books - a bibliography 1500-1976 and was co-author of Bees and the Law.

David kept bees for over 60 years and when he was not tending his hives he could be found browsing through his extensive collection of bee books. He was also a volunteer for the National Canal clearing scheme.
